ArenaNet just dropped some strong opinions about the MMO genre while explaining how Guild Wars 3 will break from the past. In a June 17 post, the developers laid out their thinking on monetisation, calling out a lot of modern live service games for hiding what’s basically a subscription fee.
The “optional” trap
The team behind Guild Wars 3 argues that many live service games dress up recurring payments as something else. According to ArenaNet, these games demand money on a regular basis but frame it as optional content passes or battle passes.
“Many live service games are just an MMO subscription ‘hidden inside of a neat ‘optional’ package’.”
That’s the core of their critique. They see a lot of the genre’s current business models as talking around the fact that you’re effectively paying a monthly fee, just without the label.
A modern evolution
ArenaNet’s post also sketches out how Guild Wars 3 will position itself as a “modern evolution” of the series. They note how much has changed since Guild Wars 1 (2005) and Guild Wars 2 (2012) — entire business models, storage formats, and even trends in cosmetic armor have come and gone.
The developers aren’t getting into specifics yet. No prices, no release dates, no version numbers. But they’re making it clear that Guild Wars 3 won’t follow the same pattern they’re criticizing. The post reads like a promise to avoid the subscription-in-disguise approach that’s become common elsewhere.
