Jagex is bringing RuneScape: Dragonwilds to PlayStation 5 when it leaves Early Access. The full 1.0 launch will mark the first time any RuneScape-related IP lands on a console.
A Landmark Move
The studio calls this a “landmark moment” for the franchise. Currently in Steam Early Access, Dragonwilds is Jagex’s first attempt at a traditional console release. It follows the same logic as the Old School RuneScape mobile port — opening the game to a new audience.
That mobile transition worked well. Clicking became tapping, and it felt natural. The PS5 version is a bigger jump. Controller support means rethinking how menus, combat, and inventory work without a mouse.
Console Challenges Ahead
Jagex still has plenty of work to do before 1.0 ships. Console ports take time, especially for a team that’s never done one. The source content doesn’t specify a release date yet — just that the PS5 version arrives alongside the full launch.
This is uncharted territory for the studio. RuneScape has lived on PC and mobile for years. Adding PS5 means adapting for a different input method, different performance targets, and a different store ecosystem.
It’s a big bet, and one that could reshape how Jagex thinks about its games going forward.
