The RuneScape: Dragonwilds team showed off Water Magic on June 16, 2026, following player feedback about wanting more magic types since the Early Access launch. It’s the next addition to the Magic Skill Tree, and it works differently from Fire and Air.
How Water Magic Changes Combat
Lead Designer Mod Pointy explained the thinking behind the new element.
“Water, naturally, is slow to move through and weighs you down - so dealing damage with Water Magic will build up a gradual slowing effect on enemies, making it harder for them to approach.”
That slow builds up to a 30% movement speed reduction on enemies. It gives you a clear edge in mobility — you can kite enemies more effectively while they struggle to close the distance.
Water Magic also leans into healing. Once you level up enough, enemies hit with water spells have a chance to spawn Water Orbs. These float in the world, and collecting one restores about a third of your max health over time. You’ll also get the usual combos and special attacks.
The Sound of Water
Mod Mosey handled the audio design. They built a huge library of water recordings — squeezing cloth, bubbles, even gurgling water in their mouth. Then they processed those sounds with techniques like sound morphing and reversing to create casting effects.
“I made sure to have a nice blend of my organic water elements with supporting bassy layers that while they aren’t necessarily sourced from water recordings they really take the sounds a step.”
The result is a magic type that sounds crisp and full of movement, matching its slow-and-heal combat identity.
