Classic Survival is no longer a mod-only dream in Space Engineers 2. With the VS2.2 update—dubbed the “Classic Survival Update”—Keen Software House has baked the community’s favourite survival start directly into the world creation screen, no workarounds required.
What’s New in Classic Survival
The headline feature is the Classic Survival Start option, now selectable under New Game -> Worlds -> Classic Survival. This eliminates the need for external mods to get that raw, resource-scrounging experience. Beyond that, the update introduces voxel-based resource yields from planetary terrain:
- Soil yields Iron
- Rock yields Nickel
- Sand yields Silicon
Asteroid materials remain unchanged, keeping space survival deliberately tough.
Balance Overhaul and Quality of Life
Keen has rebalanced the early game to feel more deliberate. Backpack building now has limited components, forcing smarter inventory management. Welder and grinder speeds have been tweaked: MK1 is 1.25× faster, while MK2 and MK3 follow a cleaner progression curve. The hand drill’s secondary mode radius gets a slight bump, and ore yields are adjusted—Iron down slightly, Nickel and Silicon up. Basic block recipes and starter component costs (steel plates, construction components, steel tubes, glass) are simplified.
For newcomers, the Smelter Block is now an initial unlock and integrated into the FTUE (First-Time User Experience), complete with a map marker. Onboarding tooltips now include production blocks beyond the Gearforge, helping prevent early-game softlocks. The ore collection HUD notification has also been cleaned up, displaying across two lines for better readability.
“Overall experience remains very close to the community feedback mod version, with minor ore balance tweaks.”
What This Means for Players
If you’ve been holding off on Space Engineers 2 because the survival mode felt incomplete, this update is your green light. The Classic Survival Start gives you the gritty, resource-driven challenge the community asked for, while the balance changes and UI improvements make the first hour less frustrating. Note that some features—like Credits & Trading, Cargo Ships, and Moons—require a new save, and Hinge Blocks and Subgrid Projection Support are still in progress.
Space Engineers 2 remains an alpha, but updates like this show Keen is listening. If you’re a builder who craves a survival-first experience, now is the time to jump in—just be ready to start fresh.
