The latest Space Engineers 2 dev diary is a visual feast, proving that Keen Software House isn’t just building a bigger sandbox—they’re making it look jaw-droppingly good. The May 21st update dives deep into lighting overhauls, new biomes, and the first real signs of hostile NPC life.
Lighting That Actually Pops
The VRAGE3 engine is getting a serious glow-up. The team is tackling distance fog, atmospheric scattering, and shadow coloration to kill that “whitish specular halo” that plagued earlier builds. The result? Stronger contrast and more vivid subsurface scattering on vegetation. In the comparison GIFs, foliage no longer looks like it’s coated in plastic—it actually breathes.
Snowy Peaks, Savanna Shrubs, and Planetary Stations
Art lead Mirko Bartolini detailed the new procedural flora system. Snow is now applied dynamically based on biome and altitude, with tree density decreasing as you climb higher. The gallery also introduces savanna bushes and fully-built planetary stations, including a Renegade Base on Kemik and a Refinery on Caligo.
“Implementation of snowy flora for tundra and high-mountain regions. Flora distribution is built from five ‘altitude and position-based’ layers.”
These handcrafted points of interest are being seeded across Almagest to prep the world for when NPCs and Factions finally arrive. For players, this means exploration will feel less empty and more like a living solar system.
NPCs Finally Fight Back
The biggest news? The team is finally teaching NPCs how to react and shoot back. For months, the focus was on foundations—now the “truly exciting part” begins. This is the first concrete step toward dynamic combat encounters, turning derelict stations from scenery into threats.
Space Engineers 2 is shaping up to be a generational upgrade, but the real test will be whether these systems hold up when players start building their own war machines. For now, the future looks bright—and much more dangerous.
